Let \(H(\Omega)\) be the space of all holomorphic functions on a domain \(\Omega\i{\mathbb C}^N\), endowed with the compact-open topology. Let \(H^\infty(\Omega)\) be the Banach space of all bounded members of \(H(\Omega)\) and let \(\mathcal B\) be its unit ball (\(H^\infty(\Omega)\) is assumed to be nontrivial). A function \(f\in\mathcal B\) is \(\mathcal B\)-universal with respect to a given sequence \((\phi_n)\) of holomorphic self-maps of \(\Omega\) if \(\{f\circ\phi_n:n\in\mathbb N\}\) is dense in \(\mathcal B\) for the compact-open topology. Among others, the authors prove several general universality criteria from which they derive the existence of universal functions, both in a non-constructive and a constructive way. They achieve this by exploiting close relations which exist between \(\mathcal B\)-universal functions and so-called asymptotic interpolating sequences of type one in \(\Omega\) which were introduced a few years ago by \textit{P.\,Gorkin} and \textit{R.\,Mortini} [J.~Lond.\ Math.\ Soc., II.\ Ser.\ 67, No.\,2, 481--498 (2003; Zbl 1054.46036)].
