The authors prove the following theorem of existence of a central point of a compact, simply connected subset \(D\) of \(\mathbb{R}^{2}\): If every two points of \(D\) can be connected by a polygonal line with at most \(n\) edges within \(D\) then there is a point in \(D\) that can be connected to every other point in \(D\) by a polygonal line with at most \(\left[ \frac{n+1}{2}\right] \) edges, where \(\left[ x\right] \) denotes the integer part of \(x.\) The result is the best possible for all \(n.\) The proof is based on a version of Helly's topological theorem given by the authors in [\textit{E. Magazanik, M. A. Perles}, Isr. J. Math. 160, 143--155 (2007; Zbl 1149.26019)].
