The paper deals with the Dirichlet and Cauchy problems for the inhomogeneous Hamilton-Jacobi equation \(u_t-\Delta u=| \nabla u| ^p+h(x)\), where \(p>1\). The authors show a close relation between the existence of global classical solutions (which are bounded locally in space and uniformly in time) and the existence of stationary solutions (with gradient possibly singular on the boundary in the case of the Dirichlet problem and \(p>2\)). The proofs are based on new gradient estimates of solutions obtained by Bernstein type arguments. These estimates also imply a Liouville-type theorem for solutions of the equation \(u_t-\Delta u=| \nabla u| ^p\) in \(\mathbb R^N\times(-\infty,0)\). Results on universal bounds for global solutions are also obtained.
