Let \({\mathcal H}\) and \({\mathcal K}\) be complex separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. For given operators \(A\in{\mathcal B}({\mathcal H})\), \(B\in {\mathcal B}({\mathcal K})\), let \( M_{C}= \left( \begin{smallmatrix} A&C\\ 0&B \end{smallmatrix} \right) \) be the operator acting on the space \({\mathcal H}\oplus{\mathcal K}\) for some arbitrary linear bounded operator \(C\) from \({\mathcal K}\) to \({\mathcal H}\). The authors obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for \(M_{C}\) to be a left Fredholm operator for some Fredholm (or invertible) operator \(C\). It is proved that for given pair of operators \(A,B\), the operator \(M_{C}\) is left Fredholm for all invertible \(C\) if and only if \(A\) and \(B\) are left Fredholm.
