    This paper concerns mixed Tsirelson spaces \(T[(S_n,\theta_n)_{n=1}^\infty]\) and the modified version \(T_M[(S_n,\theta_n)_{n=1}^\infty]\). The definition of the former is given implicitly as the completion of \(c_{00}\) under the norm \[ \|x\| = \|x\|_\infty \vee \sup_{\substack{ n,r\\ (E_i)_1^r}} \theta_n \sum_{i=1}^r \|E_i x\| \] where the latter \(\sup\) is over sets \(E_1 <\cdots < E_r\) so that \((\min E_i)_1^r \in S_n\), the \(n\)th-Schreier class of sets. The definition for \(T_M\) is similar, but one replaces \(E_1<\cdots < E_r\) with the \(E_i\)'s being disjoint. Tsirelson's famous space \(T\) is just \(T[(S_1,\frac12)]\) and it is known that \(T\) and \(T_M\) are naturally isomorphic [\textit{P.\,G.\thinspace Casazza} and \textit{E.\,Odell}, ``Tsirelson's space and minimal subspaces'', Texas functional analysis seminar 1982--1983, Longhorn Notes, Univ.\ Texas Press, Austin/TX, 61--72 (1983)]. Also, \(T[(S_n,\theta)]\) is isomorphic to \(T_M[(S_n,\theta)]\) for \(0<\theta <1\), \(n\in \mathbb N\) [\textit{A.\,Manoussakis}, Glasg.\ Math.\ J.\ 46, No.\,2, 379--390 (2004; Zbl 1060.46006)]. More known results are given in the introduction. The main result of this paper is that, if \(0< \inf \varphi_n \leq \sup \varphi_n<1\), then \(T_M [(S_n,\theta_n)_{n=1}^\infty]\) and \(T[(S_n,\theta_n)_{n=1}^\infty]\) are not isomorphic. Here, \((\theta_n)\) is assumed to be regular (\(\theta_n\) is nonincreasing, \(\theta_{m+n} \geq \theta_m\theta_n\)), \(\theta = \lim\theta_n^{1/n}\) and \(\varphi_n = \theta_n/\theta^n\). Other results are given, e.g., the spaces are not isomorphic if \(\theta_n = \frac1{n+1}\) for \(n\in \mathbb N\). The proofs are quite technical.
