The admissible space for the finite volume element method (FVE) is the same as the finite element method but the numerical scheme is derived from another volume integral formulation of the partial differential equation. The main object of this paper is to derive error estimates for FVE for a class of hyperbolic equations when the discretization is over a triangular mesh with piecewise linear functions. The error estimates are given in \(L^p\) and \(W^{1,p}\) norms (\(2\leq p\leq\infty\)) under the assumption that the mesh is quasi-uniform. Some super-convergence results for the method are also proved.
