The essential approximate point spectrum \(\sigma _{\text{eap}}(\cdot)\), respectively the essential defect spectrum \(\sigma _{e\delta}(\cdot)\), of a closed densely defined operator \(A\) on a Banach space \(X\) are defined as \(\sigma _{\text{eap}}(A) = \cap_{K \in \mathcal K(X)} \sigma_{ap}(A + K)\), respectively \(\sigma _{e\delta}(A) = \cap_{K \in \mathcal K(X)} \sigma_{\delta}(A + K)\). Here, \(\mathcal K(X)\) denotes the compact operators on \(X\), \(\sigma_{ap}(B)\) the point spectrum and \(\sigma_{\delta}(B)\) the defect spectrum of a closed densely defined operator \(B\). In this setting, the authors show that the spectra \(\sigma _{\text{eap}}(\cdot)\) and \(\sigma _{e\delta}(\cdot)\) are preserved under certain admissible perturbations. For instance, in the case of \(\sigma _{\text{eap}}(A)\), the closed densely defined operator \(K\) on \(X\) is an admissible perturbation for \(A\) if \(K\) is \(A\)-bounded and there is a point \(\mu\) in the resolvent of \(A\) such that \(K(\mu - A)^{-1}\) is a bounded operator on \(X\) which belongs to the class preserving the bounded \(\Phi_+\)- operators on \(X\). As an application, the authors compute the essential approximate point spectrum and the essential defect spectrum of certain singular particle transport operators with vacuum boundary conditions (such as linearizations of the nonlinear Boltzmann equation or some of its nonlinear simplifications).
