This paper is concerned with local and parallel algorithms for finite element approximation to time-dependent convection-diffusion equations of the form \(u_t-\Delta u+b\cdot \nabla u=f\) subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions in a Lipschitz domain. The approach relies on the fact that the global behavior of a solution is mostly governed by the lower frequency components while the local behavior of a solution is mostly governed by the higher frequency components. The authors use a coarse grid to approximate the lower frequency components and then a local fine grid to correct the residual by some local and parallel procedures. Error estimates are deduced. In the last part of the paper several numerical tests are performed to support the theoretical results.
