The author sketches a proof of \textit{A. A. Markoff}\,'s result of 1879/1880 [Math. Ann. 15, 381--407 (1879; JFM 11.0147.01), 17, 379--400 (1880; JFM 12.0143.02)] that the Lagrange spectrum is discrete below 3, with 3 as the only accumulation point. Stress is placed upon Bernoulli sequences, in a manner that can be compared with \textit{S. Yasutomi's} [Acta Arith. 84, No. 4, 337--374 (1998; Zbl 0967.11024)].
