There are several approaches for the definition of grade in the case of modules not necessary finitely generated. One of this was invented by \textit{S. F. Barger} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 36(1972), 365--368 (1973; Zbl 0265.13007)]. This is the starting point for a definition of a Cohen-Macaulay property in the non-Noetherian ring. In particular, \textit{S. Glaz} [Lect. Notes Pure Appl. Math. 171, 209--222 (1995; Zbl 0884.13011)], asked for a definition with coincides with the original definition in the Noetherian case and that coherent regular rings are Cohen-Macaulay. An approach in this direction was initiated by \textit{T. D. Hamilton} and \textit{Th. Marley} [J. Algebra 307, No. 1, 343--360 (2007; Zbl 1109.13020)]. In the paper under review, the authors start with an extensive study of different types of the notion of grade. Based on their study of the different notions of grade they investigate several notions of the definition of Cohen-Macaulayness in the non-Noetherian situation, including those of Glaz and Hamilton-Marley, see loc. cit. As examples of non-Noetherian examples of Cohen-Macaulay rings they exhibit \(R[X_1,X_2,\ldots],\) where \(R\) is a Noetherian Cohen-Macaulay ring, the absolute integral closure of a Noetherian complete local domain of prime characteristic and the perfect closure of a Noetherian regular local domain of prime characteristic. Finally they introduce the notion of weakly Cohen-Macaulayness (i.e. any generalized strong parameter sequence is a regular sequence). Then it is shown: (i) A Noetherian ring is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if it is weakly Cohen-Macaulay. (ii) Coherent regular rings are weakly Cohen-Macaulay. (iii) Let \(G\) denote a finite group acting on a weakly Cohen-Macaulay ring \(R\) such that the order of \(G\) is a unit in \(R\) and that \(R\) is finitely generated over \(R^G,\) the ring of invariants. Then \(R^G\) is weakly Cohen-Macaulay. (iv) Let \(R\) be a Noetherian Cohen-Macaulay ring. Then \(R[X_1,X_2,\ldots]\) is weakly Cohen-Macaulay. (v) If \(R_{\mathfrak p}\) is weakly Cohen-Macaulay for all prime ideals \(\mathfrak p,\) then \(R\) is weakly Cohen-Macaulay.
