The authors discuss the existence of periodic solutions for a \(2\)-dimensional autonomous differential system which is subject to state-dependent impulsive perturbations, modelling the culture of microorganisms in a turbidostat (chemostat with feedback control of the dilution rate). It is assumed that the unperturbed system has a positive equilibrium. The authors prove that, if the threshold action level is lower than its corresponding component (describing the concentration of microorganisms), then the system has a periodic solution of order one, while if the threshold action level is larger than the above-mentioned value, then there is still a periodic solution of order one provided that the threshold action level is lower than the value of a certain expression. The proofs have a nontrivial geometrical component and are based on the construction of invariant regions with certain special properties. Finally, the nonexistence of the periodic solutions of order \(k\) is also investigated.
