The authors develop local time-stepping methods for time-dependent Maxwell equations in conducting and non-conducting media, which use smaller time steps in regions with finer meshes. This allows to treat local mesh refinement in explicit time integrators. Combined with discontinuous Galerkin FEM the resulting schemes are explicit. It is shown how to derive local time-stepping methods of arbitrarily high accuracy for non-conducting media. Numerical experiments in 2d confirm the theory and illustrate the advantage of the time integration schemes.
