The present article should be considered as an outstanding contribution to the study of the famous Chinese mathematical classic from the Han dynasty, the \textit{Jiuzhang suanshu} (the ``Nine Chapters on mathematical techniques'') because the author of the present article is the first to take into account Korean mathematics in this respect. Here, he brightly shows that, in his \textit{Kujang sulhae}, Nam Pyǒng-Gil (1820--1869), a Korean mathematician from the 19th century, reinterpreted the ancient Chinese commentaries on the Jiuzhang suanshu, by Liu Hui and Li Chunfeng, to the light of contemporary mathematical knowledge which had been made available to him through the channel of Chinese translation of European mathematical works, particularly those found in the \textit{Shuli jingyun} (ca. 1723), a famous mathematical encyclopaedia whose compilation was ordered by the Kangxi emperor, a century earlier. In addition to a wealth of perceptive comments, the reader will also find here an introduction to Korean mathematics from the Chosǒn dynasty, a biography of Nam Pyǒng-Gil, an detailed analysis of its commentary without forgetting a quite adequate bibliography.
