The authors improve standard splitting methods with weighting schemes based on the Zassenhaus product to improve the initialization process. An acceleration of the Lie--Trotter and Strang splitting methods can be done, and also iterative splitting schemes. By adding additional terms to the starting conditions of the splitting methods, all weighted methods achieve more accurate results. The applications to parabolic equations show the usefulness of the theoretical results in balancing time and space discretizations. The computational time is reduced and a higher order accuracy is obtained with the embedded Zassenhaus formula. By thinning out the underlying matrices in the Zassenhaus formula, the solver process is accelerated. Numerical examples validate the improved splitting methods.
