The present paper is the final part of a series on the classification of totally geodesic submanifolds of irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank 2. After this problem has been solved for 2-Grassmannians in two articles of the author of the present paper [Differ. Geom. Appl. 26, No.~1, 79--96 (2008; Zbl 1144.53070); Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 361, No.~9, 4927--4967 (2009; Zbl 1176.53054)], and for the space \(\text{SU}(3)/\text{SO}(3)\) [the author, Geom. Dedicata 138, 25--50 (2009; Zbl 1167.53045)], in this work, the author gives the classification for the remaining irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank 2 and compact type: \(\text{SU}(6)/\text{Sp}(3)\), \(\text{SO}(10)/\text{U}(5)\), \(E_{6}/(\text{U}(1) \cdot \text{Spin}(10))\), \(E_{6}/F_{4}, G_{2}/\text{SO}(4)\), \(\text{SU}(3)\), \(\text{Sp}(2)\) and \(G_{2}\). These results complete the work of \textit{B.-Y. Chen} and \textit{T. Nagano} [Duke Math. J. 45, 405--425 (1978; Zbl 0384.53024)]. In the spaces \(\text{Sp}(2)\), \(G_{2}/\text{SO}(4)\) and \(G_{2}\), there exist maximal totally geodesic submanifolds, isometric to 2- or 3-dimensional spheres, which have a skew position in the ambient space in the sense that their geodesic diameter is strictly larger than the geodesic diameter of the ambient space.
