Extensions of Schur's irreducibility results (Q716493)

The generalized Laguerre polynomials \(L_n^{(\alpha )}(x)\) represent a particular case of a more general class of polynomials, called the generalized Schur polynomials. The authors investigate the irreducibility of the generalized Laguerre polynomials \(L_n^{(\alpha )}(x)\) with \(0\leq \alpha \leq 50\). They show that \(L_n^{(\alpha )}(x)\) is irreducible except the cases when \(n=2\), \(\alpha \in \{ 2,7,14,23,34,47\}\) and \(n=4\), \(\alpha \in \{ 5,23\}\) where it has a linear factor. The irreducibility of the generalized Schur polynomials is also investigated and several general results are presented.
