Let \(R\) be an associative ring with 1, \(T_\infty(R)\) the group of all invertible infinite upper triangular matrices over \(R\), and \(\mathrm{UT}_\infty(R)\) the subgroup of unitriangular matrices (with ones along the main diagonal). The first theorem claims that \(\mathrm{UT}_\infty(R)\) is the derived group (i.e., the commutator subgroup) of \(T_\infty(R)\) provided that \(R\) is commutative of stable rank 1 and 1 is the sum of two units. The second theorem describes the derived group of the Vershik-Kerov group [cf. \textit{A. M. Vershik} and \textit{S. V. Kerov}, Funct. Anal. Appl. 32, No. 3, 147-152 (1998); translation from Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 32, No. 3, 3-10 (1998; Zbl 1089.22006)] of infinite matrices over the same \(R\) with finitely many nonzero entries below the diagonal.
