Let \(K\) be a complete valued field extension of the field \(\mathbb{Q}_p\) of the \(p\)-adic numbers (\(p\) is a prime number). Let \(q \in K\) be such that \(\left| q -1 \right| < 1\) and \(q\) is not a root of unity. In [Adv. Math. 153, No.~2, 185--230 (2000; Zbl 1003.11055)], \textit{K. Conrad} constructed a \(q\)-analogue of the popular Mahler orthonormal base on the space \(C(\mathbb{Z}_p)\) of the \(K\)-valued continuous functions on the ring of the \(p\)-adic integers \(\mathbb{Z}_p\). This \(q\)-analogue, whose elements are \(q\)-polynomials, is again an orthonormal base of \(C(\mathbb{Z}_p)\). By using the base of K.\,Conrad, the author proves, as in umbral calculus, that there is a bijective correspondence between the class of orthonormal bases \((h_n)_{n \geq 0}\) on \(C(\mathbb{Z}_p)\) such that the \(h_n\) are \(q\)-polynomial functions of \(q\)-binomial type with \(h_0(x) =1\), and a certain class of continuous operators \(C(\mathbb{Z}_p) \rightarrow C(\mathbb{Z}_p)\) that commute with the operator \(\tau_1\) defined by \(\tau_1(f)(x) = f(x+1)\).
