The main result in the present paper establishes that, if a continuous linear operator with dense range is perturbed by a compact nonlinear operator with bounded range, then the resulting operator also has dense range. The authors apply this abstract result to the study of the approximate controllability of control systems governed by the semilinear heat equation.
