An elliptic problem is considered and discretized by the finite volume method. A correction of a general finite volume scheme using a nonlinear technique is presented, which guarantees a discrete maximum principle. The proposed correction is proven to satisfy some useful general properties of many finite volume schemes. Based on that, two specific corrections and the corresponding approximate solutions are shown to converge to the continuous one as the size of the mesh tends to zero. Finally, numerical results for these corrections are shown suppressing the local minima produced by the original finite volume scheme.
