The authors construct a notion of trace, called an external trace, associated to a closed monoidal derivator. They show that in certain conditions the trace of the homotopy colimit of an endomorphism of a fibewise dualisable object can be expressed in terms of an external trace. This leads to an explicit formula for the trace when the derivator is a \(\mathbb{Q}\)-linear triangulated derivator and when the underlying category is a finite EI-category; here an EI-category is a category in which every endomorphism is invertible. The result generalises the additivity of traces in monoidal categories with compatible triangulations.
