Let \(\mathcal{D}\) be the Dirichlet space on the unit disk \(\mathbb{D}\) and let \(\mathcal{D}_h\) be the harmonic Dirichlet space \(\mathcal{D}_h=\{f+\overline g: f,g\in \mathcal{D}\}\). In this paper the authors study the properties of the weak product \(\mathcal{D}_h\odot \mathcal{D}_h\) and its relationship with the space \(\mathcal{D}\odot \mathcal{D}\). It is proved that: 1) \(f\in \mathcal{D}_h\odot \mathcal{D}_h\) if and only if \(\mathrm{Re\,}f\) and \(\mathrm{Im\,}f\) are in \(\mathcal{D}_h\odot \mathcal{D}_h\). 2) If \(f\) is real-valued, there exist real-valued functions \(u,v\in \mathcal{D}_h\) such that \(f=uv\). 3) \(\mathcal{D}\odot \mathcal{D}=H^1\cap (\mathcal{D}_h\odot \mathcal{D}_h)\). 4) \(\mathcal{D}\odot \mathcal{D}\) is a closed subspace of \(\mathcal{D}_h\odot \mathcal{D}_h\). 5) The Cauchy projection maps \(\mathcal{D}_h\odot \mathcal{D}_h\) onto \(\mathcal{D}\odot \mathcal{D}\). The dual space of \(\mathcal{D}\odot \mathcal{D}\) was characterized in [\textit{N. Arcozzi} et al., Anal. PDE 3, No. 1, 21--47 (2010; Zbl 1262.30066)] and the result implies a characterization of the dual of \(\mathcal{D}_h\odot \mathcal{D}_h\). The authors show that this characterization also follows from results of [\textit{V. G. Maz'ya} and \textit{I. E. Verbitsky}, Acta Math. 188, No. 2, 263--302 (2002; Zbl 1013.35021)], establishing a precise connection between the results of the above cited papers. A different kind of connection between these papers was established in [\textit{C. Cascante} and \textit{J. M. Ortega}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 140, No. 7, 2429--2440 (2012; Zbl 1276.30063)], where the authors give an alternative proof of the characterization of the dual space of \(\mathcal{D}\odot \mathcal{D}\). The paper under review also contains some generalizations of the above results for weighted harmonic Dirichlet spaces and for Hilbert spaces of holomorphic functions on a domain \(\Omega\) in \( \mathbb{C}^n\).
