The non stationary gravity flow of an inviscid perfect fluid in a domain \(\Omega_t\in \mathbb{R}^2\) is considered. This is a free boundary problem with the free surface, \(S_t=\partial \Omega_t\). The conditions on the free surface are: \(S_t\) moves with the normal component of the velocity and the pressure vanishes. If \(\phi(t,x)\) represents the restriction of the velocity potential on the free boundary \(S_t\) defined as \(S_t=\{(x,y)/y=h(t,x)\}\), the equations of motion lead to the system of water wave equations: \[ \partial_t h=G(h)\phi, \] \[ \partial_t \phi=-h-\frac{1}{2} |\phi_x|^2+\frac{1}{2(1+|h_x|^2)}(G(h)\phi+h_x\phi_x)^2, \] with \(G(h)=\sqrt{1+|h_x|^2}{\mathcal N}(h)\), \({\mathcal N}(h)\) representing the Dirichlet-Neumann operator associated to the flow domain. For sufficiently smooth and localized initial data the global existence of small solutions for the system of water wave equations is proved.
