This article deals with the life and work of the Italian mathematician Luigi Fantappiè (1901--1956), whose main claim to fame is having proved the rigidity of the real semisimple Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{so}(4,1)\) in 1954 in connection with his investigations in general relativity [\textit{L. Fantappiè}, Atti Accad. Naz. Lincei, VIII. Ser., Rend., Cl. Sci. Fis. Mat. Nat. 17, 158--165 (1954; Zbl 0057.20203)].
