Motivated by the hyperkähler SYZ conjecture, the author introduces the notion of a degenerate twistor space, associated to a closed, semi-positive \((1,1)\)-form of rank \(2n\) on an irreducible holomorphically symplectic manifold of dimension \(4n\). This form corresponds to a first-order deformation (when it is non-degenerate too, it integrates to a twistor line). The author proves that the almost complex structure induced on a degenerate twistor space is integrable. The paper examines new possibilities for attacking the problem of deciding when a holomorphic symplectic manifold does admit a Lagrangian fibration.
