Abstract: Let X be a complex normed space. Based on the right norm derivative ho+, we define a mapping hoinfty by egin{equation*} ho_{_{infty}}(x,y) = frac1piint_0^{2pi}e^{i heta} ho_{_{+}}(x,e^{i heta}y)d heta quad(x,yin X). end{equation*} The mapping hoinfty has a good response to some geometrical properties of X. For instance, we prove that hoinfty(x,y)=hoinfty(y,x) for all x,yinX if and only if X is an inner product space. In addition, we define a hoinfty-orthogonality in X and show that a linear mapping preserving hoinfty-orthogonality has to be a scalar multiple of an isometry. A number of challenging problems in the geometry of complex normed spaces are also discussed.
