Let \(\mathcal{S}^{n}_0\) denote the set of star bodies in \(\mathbb{R}^n\), that is, the set of star-shaped bodies \(L\) with continuous radial function \(\rho_L:=\mathrm{sup}\{c\geq 0\,:\,cx\in L\}\). The space \(\mathcal{S}^n_0\) is endowed with the radial metric. A function \(Z:\mathcal{S}^n_0\to\mathbb{R}\) is a valuation if \[ Z(K\cup L)+Z(K\cap L)=Z(K)+Z(L) \] for all \(K,L\in\mathcal{S}^n_0\). The author obtains a characterization result for continuous, positive, rotation invariant valuations \(Z:\mathcal{S}^n_0\to [0,\infty)\) verifying \(Z(\{0\})=0\). He proves that such valuations are of the form \[ Z(K)=\int_{S^{n-1}}\theta(\rho_K(t))dm(t), \] where \(\theta:[0,\infty)\to [0,\infty)\) is a continuous function satisfying \(\theta(0)=0\) and \(m\) is the Lebesgue measure on \(S^{n-1}\). The author also shows that for every function \(\theta:[0,\infty)\to\mathbb{R}\), not necessarily positive and with arbitrary value for \(\theta(0)\), the above expression yields a continuous, rotation invariant valuation. As a corollary of the characterization result, he shows that every continuous, rotation invariant valuation \(Z:\mathcal{S}^n_0\to [0,\infty)\) with \(Z(\{0\})=0\) can be approximated uniformly on bounded subsets of \(\mathcal{S}^n_0\) by dual quermassintegrals.
