A celebrated theorem of \textit{D. G. Quillen} [Invent. Math. 5, 237--242 (1968; Zbl 0198.35205)] asserts, in equivalent terms, that a positive polynomial on an odd dimensional sphere is a sum of hermitian squares, when embedding the sphere into hermitian space \(\mathbb C^d\). Originally, Quillen used quantization of Toeplitz operators in Fock space and Fredholm theory to infer the conclusion. There are at present several proofs of this result, one advocated by \textit{D. W. Catlin} and \textit{J. P. D'Angelo} [Math. Res. Lett. 6, No. 1, 43--60 (1999; Zbl 0956.32020)] and a purely algebraic proof [\textit{M. Putinar} and \textit{C. Scheiderer}, Münster J. Math. 7, No. 2, 671--696 (2014; Zbl 1342.13037)]. The authors simplify Catlin and D'Angelo proof, by estimating the Bergman kernel associated to a Hermitian line bundle on complex projective space. Ideas of \textit{G. Tian} [J. Differ. Geom. 32, No. 1, 99--130 (1990; Zbl 0706.53036)] naturally come into play.
