    A function \(f\) is said to be cartoon-like if it is given by \(f= g_1 + \chi_B \cdot g_2\), with \(g_1, g_2 \in C^2\) having supports in \((0,1)^2\). Here \(\chi_B\) is the characteristic function of \(B \subset (0,1)^2\) with \(\partial B \in C^2\). Let \(\{ \phi_j \}^\infty_{j=1}\) be a system such that any \(f\in L_2 (R^2)\) can be represented as \(f=\sum^\infty_{j=1} c_j (f) \phi_j\). Then the related best \(N\)-term approximation \(\sigma_N (f)\) is given by \[ \sigma_N (f) = \inf \| f-g \, | L_2 (\mathbb R^2) \| \] where the infimum is taken over all \(g= \sum c_j (g) \phi_j\) such that at most \(N\) coefficients \(c_j (g)\) are different from zero. It is the main aim of the paper to compare best \(N\)-term approximations based on wavelet systems on the one hand and shearlet systems on the other hand.
