There is a method to compute \(\mathrm{reg}(-)\) Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring: assign to each homogeneous ideal \(I\) another ideal \(N(I)\) called of nested type. There is an explicit formula due to \textit{I. Bermejo} and \textit{P. Gimenez} [J. Algebra 303, No. 2, 592--617 (2006; Zbl 1105.13010)] that connects \(\mathrm{reg}(I)\) to certain numerical invariants of \(N(I)\). It may be useful to recall that a monomial ideal of nested type is defined as the monomial ideals whose associated primes are all of the form \((x_0, \dots , x_i)\) for various \(i\). Here, \(\{x_0,\dots,x_n\}\) denotes the full system of indeterminate. The paper under review presents and studies the notion of nested modules. The general idea is to compute projective dimension and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity without using of the minimal graded free resolution.
