Let \(G\) be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over \(\mathbb{C}\). The aim of this paper is to study the connected automorphism group of a smooth Schubert variety in the flag variety \(G/B\). Let \(w \in W\) be such that \(X(w)\) is smooth; then \(\mathrm{Aut}(X(w))\) is an algebraic group. Let \(A_w\) denote the connected component of \(\mathrm{Aut}(X(w))\) containing the identity automorphism. Let \(T\) be a maximal torus of \(G\) contained in \(B\) and \(B^+\) be the opposite Borel subgroup of \(G\). Let \(\alpha_0\) denote the highest root of \(G\) with respect to \(T\) and \(B^+\). For the left action of \(G\) on \(G/B\), let \(P_w\) denote the stabiliser of \(X(w)\) in \(G\). Let \(\varphi : P_w \rightarrow A_w\) be the homomorphism of algebraic groups induced by the action of \(P_w\) on \(X(w)\). The author shows that \(\varphi\) is injective if and only if \(w^{-1}(\alpha_0)\) is a negative root. If \(G\) is simply laced, then \(\varphi\) is always surjective. In particular, in this case the previous criterion becomes a criterion for \(\varphi\) to be an isomorphism. Moreover, the author proves the following vanishing result: Let \(T_{G/B}\) be the restriction of the tangent bundle of \(G/B\) to \(X(w)\). The author proves that \(H^i(X(w), T_{G/B}) =0\) for every \(i\geq 1\) and every simple algebraic group of adjoint type \(G\) over \(\mathbb{C}\). He studies also \(H^0(X(w), T_{G/B})\). In particular, he proves that when \(G\) is simply laced, \(H^0(X(w), T_{G/B})\) is the adjoint representation of \(G\) if and only if \(w^{-1}(\alpha_0)\) is a negative root.
