Let \(X\) be a \(m\)-dimensional smooth projective variety and consider, on \(X\), an invertible sheaf \(L\) and a rank \(n\) locally free sheaf \(F\). For an extension \(0 \to L \to E \to F \to 0\) and a \((n+1)\)-dimensional linear subspace \(W\) of the kernel of the corresponding map from \(H^0(X,F) \to H^1(X,L)\) there is a natural way to construct a generalized adjoint form \(\Omega \in H^0(X, \det E)\). Let \(\lambda^n\) be the \(n\)-wedge product of sections of \(F\). The main results of this paper (see Thms. A and B) characterize, Generalizing the Castelnuovo free trick, \(\Omega\) belonging to the image of the tensor map \(H^0(X,L) \otimes \lambda^n W \to H^0(X\det E)\) . This allows the authors to give a new formulation for the Griffiths infinitesimal Torelli theorem fo smooth projective hypersurfaces.
