\textit{R. Srzednicki} and the author introduced a method using periodic segments to detect periodic solutions and chaotic dynamics in systems generated by time-periodic non-autonomous ordinary differential equations [J. Differ. Equations 135, No. 1, 66--82 (1997; Zbl 0873.58049); in: Handbook of topological fixed point theory. Berlin: Springer. 905--944 (2005; Zbl 1079.37012)]. Here a connection is made between this method of periodic segments and the relative Nielsen fixed point theory as extended by \textit{H. Schirmer} [Pac. J. Math. 122, 459--473 (1986; Zbl 0553.55001)] and \textit{X. Zhao} [in: Handbook of topological fixed point theory. Berlin: Springer. 659--684 (2005; Zbl 1080.55006)].
