The paper is concerned with the relations between the approximative compactness and the continuity of the metric projection. Let \(X\) be a normed space and \(C\) a closed convex subset of \(X\). It is known that if \(C\) is approximatively compact, then \(C\) is proximinal and the metric projection operator \(P_C\) is upper semi-continuous. The authors show that if every proximinal hyperplane in \(X\) is approximatively compact, then the space \(X\) has the property \(H\) (called also the Kadec-Klee property). They also show that there exist a renorming \(\|\cdot\|'\) of \(\ell^2\) and a proximinal hyperplane \(H\) in \((\ell^2,\|\cdot\|')\) with \(P_H\) continuous, but with \(H\) not approximatively compact. The results are applied to the study of the set-valued generalized metric inverses. Let \(X,Y\) be Banach spaces and \(T:X\to Y\) a linear operator with domain \(D(T)\) and range \(R(T)\). For \(y\in Y\), an element \(x_0\in D(T)\) is called a best approximate solution (b.a.s.) of the equation \(Tx=y\) if \(\|Tx_0-y\|=\inf\{\|Tx-y\| : x\in D(T)\}\). One denotes by \(T^\partial(y)\) the (possibly empty) set of all b.a.s. of the equation \(Tx=y\). The authors prove the existence of continuous selections for \(T^\partial\) provided that the space \(X\) is 3-strictly convex and \(R(T)\) is an approximatively compact Chebyshev subspace of \(Y\). They also prove that the continuity properties of the set-valued operator \(T^\partial\) are closely related to those of the metric projection \(P_{N(T)}\) on the null space \(N(T)\) of \(T\).
