Let \(X\) be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension \(n \geq 2\) and let \(H\) be an ample line bundle on \(X\). Let \(\mathcal M(v)\) be the moduli space of \(\mu\)-stable torsion-free sheaves on \(X\) having Mukai vector \(v\). A vector bundle \(E_1\) on \(X\), which is \(\mu\)-stable with respect to \(H\), is said to be rigid if \(\mathrm{Ext}^1(E_1,E_1)=0\). Fixing a rigid \(E_1\) as above, the author introduced in [Asian J. Math. 6, 567--577 (2002; Zbl 1039.14022)] the Brill-Noether locus of type \((i,j)\), which is defined as follows: \(\mathcal M(v)_{i,j}:= \{E \in \mathcal M(v) | \dim \mathrm{Hom}(E_1,E) = i,\;\dim\mathrm{Ext}^1(E,E_1)=j\}\). In the paper under review, the author investigates the non-emptiness of these loci. Providing an upper bound for \(j\) in terms of the invariants of \(E\), he shows that certain \(\mathcal M(v)_{i,j}\) are empty. When \(X\) is a threefold, this result is related to the conjectural Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality for tilt-stable objects, proposed by \textit{A. Bayer} et al. [J. Algebr. Geom. 23, No. 1, 117--163 (2014; Zbl 1306.14005)]. In fact, as an application of his result, the author proves inequalities of this type for the third Chern character of \(\mu\)-stable sheaves on Calabi-Yau threefolds.
