Let \(A\) and \(B\) be two Banach algebras and let \(T:B \to A\) be an algebra homomorphism with \(\| T\| \leq 1\). Let \(C\) denote the Cartesian product \(A\times B\), endowed with the product \((a,b)\cdot (c,d) = (ac+T(b)c+aT(d),bd)\) and with the norm \(\| x\| = \| a\| + \| b\|\) for \(x = (a,b)\in C\). The previous product is a generalization of a Banach algebra multiplication firstly considered by \textit{A. T.-M. Lau} [Fundam. Math. 118, 161--175 (1983; Zbl 0545.46051)]. The aim of the present paper is to study some homological properties of \(C\), such as approximate amenability, pseudo amenability, \(\phi\)-pseudo amenability, \(\phi\)-biflatness and \(\phi\)-biprojectivity. For instance, an example is presented showing that approximate amenability is not preserved by this construction. The authors also obtain a characterization of the double centralizer algebra of \(C\) and give an application of this characterization.
