Let \(G\) be an arbitrary finite group. The aim of this paper is to study the Brauer \(p\) blocks which admit exactly one modular character. The authors show that this character can always be lifted to an ordinary character of \(G\). In particular, this proves the existence of basic sets for this kind of blocks (proving a particular case of a conjecture by \textit{M. Geck} and \textit{G. Hiss} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 418, 173--188 (1991; Zbl 0771.20008)]. To do this, the authors study the cases of the blocks of quasi simple groups such that the set of irreducible Brauer characters in the block is contained in a single \(\Aut (G)\)-orbit. The authors are then able to obtain their main result thanks to the classification of finite simple groups.
