Asymptotic dimension was introduced by \textit{M. Gromov} [Geometric group theory. Volume 2: Asymptotic invariants of infinite groups. Proceedings of the symposium held at the Sussex University, Brighton, July 14-19, 1991. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (1993; Zbl 0841.20039)] as a large-scale analogue of covering dimension. In [Topology Appl. 157, No. 14, 2292--2296 (2010; Zbl 1198.54064)], \textit{T. Radul} introduced a transfinite extension of asymptotic dimension, called transfinite asymptotic dimension (\(\text{trasdim}\)), and proved that for a metric space \(X\), \(\text{trasdim}\, X < \infty\) (i.e., \(X\) has \(\text{trasdim}\)) if and only if \(X\) has asymptotic property C (which was introduced by \textit{A. N. Dranishnikov} [Russ. Math. Surv. 55, No. 6, 1085--1129 (2000; Zbl 1028.54032); translation from Usp. Mat. Nauk 55, No. 6, 71--116 (2000)]). In this paper, the authors introduce a new transfinite extension of asymptotic dimension, called complimentary-finite asymptotic dimension (\(\text{coasdim}\)), and prove some basic properties of \(\text{coasdim}\) such as coarse invariance, the finite union theorem and the theorem on dimension-lowering mappings. The authors also prove that \(\text{coasdim}\, X \leq \omega +k\) implies \(\text{trasdim}\, X \leq \omega +k\) for every metric space \(X\), where \(k\) is a nonnegative integer and \(\omega\) is the first infinite ordinal number, and give an example of a metric space \(X\) satisfying \(\text{coasdim}\, X = \omega +k\) and \(\text{trasdim}\, X = \omega\).
