    The author presents a detailed analysis of the construction of Laughlin states on compact Riemann surfaces of genus \(g>1\). It is shown that the dimension of the vector space of Laughlin states is at least \(q^g\) for the filling fraction \(1/q\). The author then uses path integrals to reproduce the previously conjectured \(q^g\)-degeneracy. Unlike the torus, this degeneracy does not correspond to center of mass motion. It is shown that at \(q=1\) the Laughlin states reduce to the Slater determinant of the one particle states. Lowest Landau levels and integer quantum Hall states are additionally discussed.
