Let \(\mathbb{T}^{2}=\mathbb{R}^{2}/\mathbb{Z}^{2}\) be the usual flat torus. Let \(A:\mathbb{T}^2\rightarrow \mathbb{S}^2\) be an Anosov diffeomorphism which is topologically mixing. Let \(\tau:\mathbb{T}^2\rightarrow \mathbb{R}\) be a smooth map. The author defines an \(S^1\)-extension of \(A\) as \(\widehat{A}_{\tau}:\mathbb{T}^2\times S^1 \rightarrow \mathbb{T}^2\times S^1\), where \(S^1:=\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}\) is the circle. By using transfer operators on anisotropic Hilbert spaces, the author studies the possible rates of exponential mixing by exhibiting some explicit lower bounds on the decay rate. The author proves that while the map \(M\) itself mixes at super-exponential decay rate for all analytic observables, there exists (at least rapidly mixing) extensions \(\widehat{M}_{\tau}\) and analytic observables whose rate of mixing is not faster than \((0, 618)^n\). Under some conditions, the author shows that the extension \(\widehat{A}_{\tau}\) is rapidly mixing for the Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen measure on \(\mathbb{T}^2\times S^1\). The author investigates properties of the anisotropic function space \(\mathcal{H}_{r,M}\) and the spectral properties of certain twisted transfer operators \(\mathcal{L}_q\) acting on this space.
