Let \(C\) be a weakly compact convex subset of a Banach space. It is known [\textit{W. A. Kirk}, Am. Math. Mon. 72, 1004--1006 (1965; Zbl 0141.32402)] that if \(C\) has normal structure [\textit{M. S. Brodskij} and \textit{D. P. Mil'man}, Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR, n. Ser. 59, 837--840 (1948; Zbl 0030.39603)], then it has the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings. In other words, every nonexpansive (that is, \(1\)-Lipschitz) self-mapping of \(C\) has a fixed point. In this well-written paper, the author provides a detailed and illuminating study of the connections between several variants of the normal structure concept and fixed point properties of subsets of some Banach spaces, with particular emphasis on certain Banach algebras.
