Let \(L_p = L_p [0,1]\), \(1\leq p\leq \infty\), be the standard Lebesgue space, with the unit ball \(U_p\). Let \(\{\xi_k\}_{k\in \mathbb{N}}\), \(\xi_k\in L_{\infty}\), be a Schauder basis for \(L_p\), which, in addition, is orthonormal with respect to the space \(L_2\). Let \(\{\lambda_k\}_{k\in \mathbb{N}}\) be a sequence of positive real numbers (multipliers) and let \(\Lambda\) denote the associated multiplier operator from \(L_p\) into \(L_q\), which is given by \(\Lambda \varphi = \sum_{k=1}^{\infty} \lambda_k c_k(\varphi)\xi_k\), where a series \(\sum_{k=1}^{\infty} c_k(\varphi)\xi_k\) is the generalized Fourier series of \(\varphi \in L_p\). In the present paper the authors investigate the asymptotic behavior of the \(n\)-widths of \(\Lambda(U_p)\) in \(L_q\), where \(1\leq q\leq p\leq \infty\). The following four classes of \(n\)-widths are studied: Linear, Kolmogorov, Gel'fand, and Bernstein \(n\)-widths. General upper and lower bounds for the \(n\)-widths in terms of the multipliers are established. Applying these estimates to concrete multiplier sequences, the authors obtain the exact asymptotic behavior of the \(n\)-widths of multiplier operators for several important cases.
