The theory of linkage (liaison) has been carefully studied for more than 120 years, and has branched in several different directions. In particular, it has extended to modules in several different ways, by several authors. One of these is \textit{U. Nagel}'s paper [J. Algebra 284, No. 1, 236--272 (2005; Zbl 1095.13011)], which the authors say was the inspiration for the current paper. The authors introduce and study the notion of linkage of modules by reflexive homomorphisms, which extends some of the previous results. A nice feature is that it allows for the study of linkage of modules over Cohen-Macaulay rings instead of the more restrictive Gorenstein rings that most of the previous work relied on. The authors show that several known results for Gorenstein linkage continue to be true in the new setting. For instance, the Cohen-Macaulay property is preserved. Furthermore, homological dimension and local cohomology modules are preserved in even module linkage classes. They also introduce the notion of colinkage of modules, which can be viewed as a generalization of the notion of linkage with respect to a semidualizing module. Finally, they establish an adjoint equivalence between the linked and the colinked modules.
