A ring is a (semi)fir if every (finitely generated) one-sided ideal is free of unique rank which can be determined by the Schreier-Lewin formula. The author shows that one-sided principal ideal domains are semifirs, introduces Schreier bases, and uses them to show that skew polynomial rings are firs. The author uses the Schreier-Lewin formula to determine the module type and the Grothendieck group of a perfect localization of a skew polynomial ring and to describe its maximal flat epimorphic ring of quotients as the ring of quotients with respect to the Gabriel topology defined by finite codimensional right ideals.
