Let \(q\) be a prime power. The authors introduce a non-commutative ring \(\mathbb{F}_{q^2} [x, \theta]\) attached to the finite field \(\mathbb{F}_{q^2}\), called the skew polynomial ring, and a derived left \(\mathbb{F}_{q^2} [x, \theta]\)-module, \(R_n\). They consider subsets of \(R_n\) named \(\mathbb{F}_{q}\)-linear skew cyclic codes of length \(n\) and prove that they are specific left \(\mathbb{F}_{q} [x]/\langle x^n -1 \rangle\)-submodules of \(R_n\). Then, with the help of an \(\mathbb{F}_{q}\)-linear map \(S\) going from \(\mathbb{F}_{q^2}^n\) to \(\mathbb{F}_{q^2}^{2n}\), it is proved that the image \(S(C)\) of an \(\mathbb{F}_{q}\)-linear skew cyclic code \(C\) is an additive code self-orthogonal with respect to the trace alternating form. This condition is required to get \(q\)-ary quantum codes. The corresponding parameters are obtained in Theorem 2 of the paper and some optimal binary quantum codes are deduced from this result.
