Let \(X\) be a compact Kähler manifold and let \(\mathrm{Aut}(X)\) be the group of holomorphic automorphisms of X. By theorems of Gromov [13] and Yomdin [28], the topological entropy of an element in the automorphism group of a compact Kähler manifold \(X\) is equal to the logarithm of the spectral radius of its action on the cohomology ring of \(X\). Many works have been done to study groups with positive entropy elements during the last decades. In the paper under review, the authors focus on studying zero entropy elements. The main goal is to mine structures of the action on the cohomology of \(X\) in terms of the dynamical filtrations on \(H^{1,1}(X,\mathbb{R})\). As a consequence of the above mentioned results of Gromov and Yomdin, the iterations \((g^m)^*\) of \(g^*\) has polynomial growth as \(m\rightarrow\infty\). In this paper, the authors obtain the first general upper bound on the polynomial growth of \((g^m)^*\), which is optimal in term of the dimension of \(X\) (see Theorem 1.1). A subgroup \(G\) of \(\mathrm{Aut}(X)\) is called a zero entropy group if any element of \(G\) has zero entropy. In the second main result of this paper, the authors provide an upper bound for the (essential) derived length (see subsection 1.2 for terminology) \(\ell{\mathrm{ess}}(G, X)\) for every zero entropy subgroup \(G\) in term of the dimension of \(X\) (Theorem 1.2). The authors believe that the result of Theorem 1.2 is not optimal. They propose a conjectural upper bound for the essential nilpotency class of every zero entropy subgroup in term of the dimension and the Kodaira dimension of \(X\). This conjecture will improve significantly Theorem 1.2.
