After the Paley-Wiener type theorem has been established for noncompact semisimple Lie groups by J. Arthur, the question of how the analogous theorem should be formulated for non-Riemannian semisimple symmetric spaces \(G/H\) attracts many mathematicians. Towards the answer of this question the authors obtain the following. Let \({\mathfrak a} \subset {\mathfrak q}\) be a \(\theta\)-invariant Cartan subspace for \(G/H\), \({\mathfrak a}^{\mathfrak r} = i({\mathfrak a} \cap {\mathfrak k}) + {\mathfrak a} \cap {\mathfrak p}\), and \(W\) the Weyl group for \(({\mathfrak g}_ c,{\mathfrak a}_ c)\). \(PW({\mathfrak a}^{\mathfrak r})^ W\) denotes the space of \(W\)-invariant functions on \({\mathfrak a}^{\mathfrak r}\) which are Fourier transforms of \(C^{\infty}_ c({\mathfrak a}^{\mathfrak r})\), and \(Cc^{\infty} (G/H;K)\) the space of \(K\)- finite \(C^ \infty\)-functions on \(G/H\) compactly supported modulo \(K\). Then for \(\psi \in PW({\mathfrak a}^{\mathfrak r})^ W\) and a \((K \cap H)\)- spherical representation \(\mu\) of \(K\) there exists a unique \(f \in C^ \infty_ c(G/H;K)\) of type \(\mu\) such that \(\pi_{-\infty}(f)v_ 0 = \psi(\lambda)P_ \mu v_ 0\), where \(\pi\) is any quasisimple representation of finite length with the same central character of \(\mu\), \(v_ 0\) an \(H\)-spherical vector in \(V_{-\infty}\) corresponding to \(-i \lambda \in {\mathfrak a}^*_ c\), and \(P_ \mu\) the projection in \(V_{- \infty}\) onto \(\mu\)-isotopic component of \(V_ \infty\). In the group case \(G \cong G \times G/d(G)\) this result is a corollary of Arthur's Paley-Wiener theorem, and in the noncompact Riemannian case it is equivalent to the surjectivity statement of Helgason-Gangolli's Paley- Wiener theorem. However, the proof in this paper is fairly elementary. Actually, as the second author used the technique to construct a discrete series for \(G/H\), they reduce the problem to the Riemannian case \(G^ d/H^ d\). They also characterize the zero Schwartz space in the above fashion, and derive a Paley-Wiener theorem for the isotopic spaces.
