    This paper investigates divisibility properties of Fourier coefficients of modular forms of integral weight for any congruence subgroup of \(\text{SL}_ 2(\mathbb Z)\), but the principal results are stated here only for the Ramanujan \(\tau\)-function. \textit{J. P. Serre} [Enseign. Math., II. Sér. 22, 227--260 (1976; Zbl 0355.10021)] has shown that, for a given integer \(d\), \(\tau(n)\) is divisible by \(d\) for almost all \(n\). The authors prove the stronger result that \(\tau(n)\) is divisible by \(d^{\omega}\) for almost all \(n\), where \(\omega =[\delta \log \log n]\) and \(\delta\) is a positive constant depending on \(d\). Under the generalized Riemann hypothesis they also show that \[ \sum_{p\leq x,\;\tau(p)\neq 0}(\nu(\tau(p))-\log \log p)^ 2\ll \tau(x) \log \log x, \] \[ \sum_{n\leq x,\;\tau(n)\neq 0}(\nu(\tau(n))-(1/2)(\log \log n)^ 2)^ 2\ll x (\log \log x)^ 3 \log_ 4 x, \] where \(\nu(n)\) is the number of distinct prime divisors of \(n\) and \(\log_ 4 x= \log \log \log \log x.\)
