Let \(F\) be a field of characteristic \(p\geq 0\) with \(V\) a vector space over \(F\) and suppose \(G\) is a subgroup of \(\text{GL}(V,F)=\Aut_FV\). Let \(L\) denote the set of all subgroups \(H\) of \(G\) for which \(\dim_F(V/C_V(H))\) is infinite and suppose \(\dim_F(V/C_V(G))\) is infinite. Assume also that either every descending chain \(\{G_i\}\) in \(L\) satisfies \((G_i:G_{i+1})\) finite for almost all \(i\) or every ascending chain \(\{G_i\}\) in \(L\) satisfies \((G_i:G_{i-1})\) finite for almost all \(i\). Such groups \(G\) with various additional finiteness or solubility properties have been studied in a long series of papers by a number of authors, including the authors of the paper under review. These papers are listed in the current paper. Here the authors consider locally nilpotent such groups \(G\). Their main conclusions are the following. If \(G\) is nilpotent then \(G\) is minimax. Suppose \(G\) is locally nilpotent and \(p>0\). Then \(G\) modulo its maximal periodic subgroup, \(G\) modulo its finite residual and \(G\) modulo its nilpotent residual are all minimax. (A group is minimax if it has a series of finite length each of whose factors satisfies either the minimal condition or the maximal condition on subgroups.)
