This is an expository paper on a topic of classical analysis arising from the BMO-theory of topological degree initiated by \textit{H. Brézis} and \textit{J. Nirenberg} [Sel. Math., New Ser. 1, No. 2, 197--263 (1995; Zbl 0852.58010)]. The history of the subject is sketched and five interesting questions are discussed.
